Anxiety Attacks

Anxiety Attacks: Is it Normal?

As people go about their daily lives, they subject themselves to a certain amount of stress - physically, mentally and emotionally. Some may prove to be bearable and some over the top. Despite that, it does not discount the fact that we need a moderate and tolerable level of anxiety in our lives to keep us going, thinking and responding. However, coping is a highly individualized process wherein what could trigger anxiety attacks to one may not elicit the same reaction from the other.

There is a thin line between anxiety attacks and normal worries. For one, daily worries do not come as often as anxiety attacks. They are just there to remind people that the brain works and by far, it has worked properly. Second, anxiety attacks disrupt normal day-to-day living. Anxiety attacks leave someone almost functionless because he has wallowed in deep thought over something that could be sometimes irrational and unspecified. Anxiety attacks also mean that normal coping mechanisms have failed. When the body or in this case, the mind is subject to stress, it has predetermined and proven ways to get by the situation that owner may or may not be aware. However, in the case of anxiety attacks, all defenses have been shattered and the triggering situation, thought or occurrence got the best of the person.

Anxiety attacks can be classified as mild, moderate, borderline and pure panic. As long as, one gets out of the lingering thought of what ifs, then it is still normal. However, should it disrupt one’s daily living and sometimes leave him functionless, then it is time to seek medical help.

The question therefore lies not in whether anxiety attacks are normal, it is in the capacity of a person to help – whether a family member, friend, co-worker or total stranger. It is a very difficult situation to be in and if one is unwilling to help, at least never condemn. It is curable and with the modern medicine, who knows it will be eradicated in the future.

Random Fact: In 1997 I was diagnosed with a severe case of general anxiety disorder. I was on medication for it for 2 years and then weaned myself off. I haven't been on anything for it since, and I don't care to restart. But lately the anxiety has been eating through me again, and I am kind of a mess.
