Generalized Anxiety Disorder: What is it?
Generalized anxiety disorder is a psychological condition wherein anxiety attacks becomes excessive and irrational. It is often starts at an early age and even reaches a point where the patient could not recall the last time he was relaxed. It comes in a variety of symptoms including restlessness, fatigue, irritability and sleep disruptions. The cause of this condition has not been established. It may include worrying about safety when there is no apparent and obvious danger. However, researches have shown that people with generalized anxiety disorder often have imbalances in the amount of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and epinephrine.
The risk factors of generalized anxiety disorder include childhood adversity that prove to be too much for the young mind, illness, certain personality types, stress and even genetics. For the professional to conclude that it is a generalized anxiety disorder, these criteria must be met: excessive anxiety for the last six months, difficulty in managing anxiety, anxiety related to specific symptoms like muscle tension, anxiety disrupting daily living, anxiety related to other instances including drug abuse.
Living with generalized anxiety disorder might be hard; however, treatment is available. Several medications have been invented to provide quick relief for generalized anxiety disorder attacks as long as compliance is ensured. Likewise, psychotherapy by skilled professionals is readily accessible. It requires months or even years of talk therapy or counseling for best results. Despite the longevity, the desired effect of going back to a normal life is achievable.
It takes effort from the family and the client himself to have his generalized anxiety disorder checked. Participation in the therapy by way of communicating well with the therapist is key. If family therapy is also required to treat this anxiety disorder, then the family must actively take part. If certain adjustments at home are to be made, then it should be done. The amount of support the patient gets is also helpful on way to his recovery.
