What happens during Panic attacks?

Panic attacks are sudden, oftentimes unexpected and overwhelming fear over something that can be trivial or irrational. According to research, it affects more than a third of the adult population each year. They often come in the most unexpected places away from home including while shopping for supplies in the grocery, while driving on long trips, or even while walking down the street. Panic attacks happen without any warning and strike you to the point of being helpless. It occurs in generally healthy people or in people with other medical conditions and psychological disorders.

The difference between panic attacks and anxiety attacks is the intensity and the duration of symptoms. Normally, anxiety comes rather gradually while panic hits you instantly with such tremendous intensity. The normal symptoms of panic attacks include at least four of these: shortness of breath; palpitations or accelerated heart rate; chest pain or discomfort; unexplained trembling; choking feelings; excessive and unexplained sweating; nausea or stomach pains; lightheadedness or feelings of fainting; feelings of being detached from yourself; fear of losing control; Fear of dying; numbness or tingling sensations; and hot or cold flashes.

Most panic attacks last from twenty to thirty minutes reaching its peak at ten minutes. Normally, they are self-limiting but the intense feeling remains to be excruciatingly undesirable experience. They are categorized into three types according to causative factors. Unexpected panic attacks happen in random and for no apparent reason at all. Situationally bound panic attacks and situationally predisposed panic attacks are triggered by specific situations including crossing a bridge or facing an audience.

There is no stopping such attacks especially the kind that happens adversely on unspecific occasions. However, seeking medical advice is important if such attacks become persistent. It takes a conscious effort from the person to attain a healthy mind and total well-being for his own good.

Random Fact: In 1997 I was diagnosed with a severe case of general anxiety disorder. I was on medication for it for 2 years and then weaned myself off. I haven't been on anything for it since, and I don't care to restart. But lately the anxiety has been eating through me again, and I am kind of a mess.
